Quick Decision Guide

First time in Xi'an? Stay in Beilin District — walk to everything inside the city wall.

Here for museums & culture? Yanta District puts you next to the Shaanxi History Museum and Big Wild Goose Pagoda.

Only 1 day for the Warriors? Lintong District saves commute time, but you miss the old city.

Late arrival / early flight? Near Xi'an North Station — practical, not scenic.

Best for First-Timers Historic, walkable, lively

Beilin District

Inside the city wall, centered around the Bell Tower. Walk to the Muslim Quarter (5 min), South Gate of the city wall (10 min), and Bell & Drum Towers (1 min). The most convenient location with the best atmosphere. Streets are narrow, pedestrian-friendly, and full of restaurants.

Recommended Hotels

Budget: Han Tang Inn Hostel ($9-$22/dorm). Mid: Eastern House Boutique Hotel ($37-$60). Luxury: Sofitel Legend ($120-$180).

Best for Culture Cultural, modern, quieter

Yanta District

South of the city wall, near the Big Wild Goose Pagoda and Shaanxi History Museum. Quieter than Beilin, with wider streets and newer buildings. Great for families and travelers who want to be near the museum and pagoda.

Recommended Hotels

Budget: Xi'an See Tang Hostel ($12-$27). Mid: Hilton Xi'an ($60-$100). Luxury: The Westin Xi'an ($100-$150).

Best for Warriors Access Suburban, quiet, limited nightlife

Lintong District

40 minutes east of downtown, near the Terracotta Warriors and Huaqing Hot Springs. Convenient if the Warriors are your main focus, but far from everything else. Only recommended if you have limited time and the Warriors are priority #1.

Recommended Hotels

Budget: Lintong local guesthouses ($15-$30). Mid: Angsana Xi'an Lintong ($75-$120).

Best for Transit Convenient, generic, transit-oriented

Near Xi'an North Station

Generic hotel district near the high-speed train station. Good for late arrivals or early departures. 20 minutes by metro to the city center. Cheaper than downtown but characterless.

Recommended Hotels

Budget: 7 Days Inn ($18-$30). Mid: Holiday Inn Express ($37-$60).

Booking Tips from Local Experience

1

Use Trip.com for best China prices. International Booking.com works, but Trip.com (Ctrip) often has 10-20% lower rates for Chinese hotels. Both accept international credit cards.

2

Confirm foreign guest policy. Always double-check that the hotel accepts foreign guests before booking. Smaller guesthouses may not have the license. Look for "Foreigner-friendly" tags or call ahead.

3

Bring your passport. Chinese law requires hotels to register foreign guests with police. You will need your passport at check-in. Some hotels photocopy your visa page too.

4

Inside the wall = better atmosphere. If you are unsure, default to Beilin District inside the city wall. You walk to 80% of Xi'an's top attractions, and the streets are full of life day and night.

5

Weekend surcharge is real. Friday and Saturday nights cost 20-40% more than weekday nights. If your dates are flexible, arrive mid-week for the best rates.

FAQ

Which area is best for first-time visitors?

Beilin District (inside the city wall) is the best area for first-timers. You can walk to the Muslim Quarter (5 min), City Wall South Gate (10 min), and Bell Tower (1 min). Most budget and mid-range hotels are here, and the neighborhood is safe, walkable, and full of restaurants at all hours.

How much does a hotel cost in Xi'an?

Budget hostels: $9-$22 per dorm bed. Mid-range boutique hotels: $37-$75 per night. International 4-star chains: $75-$120. Luxury (Sofitel Legend, Westin): $120-$220. Prices double during Golden Week (Oct 1-7) and Chinese New Year.

Can foreign guests stay at any hotel?

No. Not all hotels in China are licensed to accept foreign guests. Always look for the 'Foreigner-friendly' tag on Booking.com or Trip.com. Smaller guesthouses often cannot host foreigners. International chains (Holiday Inn, Hilton, Sofitel) always can.

Should I stay near the Terracotta Warriors?

Only if the Warriors are your sole focus and you have limited time. Lintong District is 40 km east of downtown — convenient for the Warriors but far from everything else (City Wall, Muslim Quarter, museums, nightlife). For a 2+ day trip, stay downtown and take a day trip.

When is the cheapest time to book?

January and February (excluding Chinese New Year week) are the cheapest months. Hotels drop 30-50% below peak prices. November and late August are also good value. Most expensive: October 1-7 (Golden Week), Chinese New Year week, and summer weekends.
